Children/Youth Eletrical Safety Programs

Children (elementary grades; up to 13 years)

Our children's electrical safety education program is designed to educate children about ways to protect themselves from dangers posed by electrical facilities and encourage the safe use of electricity.

1. Electrical Safety Presentations

Hydro One Networks has electrical service connections with over 1000 elementary schools across Ontario. We are implementing a proactive program of offering electrical safety presentations to each school once every four years. Our presenters use electrical hazard simulators such as Hazard Hamlet and High Line Hazard. Our approach is to visit all connected schools within a school board in one calendar year…then return to that board in four years.

Hazard Hamlet is one of our popular demonstration models. It makes sparks fly when a miniature kite hits the power lines, a car crashes into a hydro pole, a child climbs into a transformer station, and a dozen other dangerous situations. Click here for an animated tour of Hazard Hamlet.

Harry Hazard is a hapless fictional "hero" in our Hazard Hamlet companion booklets. These booklets are distributed to students following school presentations. To view a copy of the booklets click below:

2. Educational CD-ROM

Hydro One Networks has developed a CD-ROM "The Wonders of Electricity…an adventure in safety" for children 8 to 11. This CD-ROM has been provided to elementary schools and public libraries throughout the province. When we visit schools to make presentations, we offer the school additional copies of this CD-ROM.

3. Sponsorships and Partnerships

Hydro One Networks supports community safety initiatives, such as the Children's Safety Village of London Area and the Community Safety Village of York Region. Opportunities such as these help us to reinforce the electrical safety messages we deliver in the schools.

Hydro One Networks has partnered with The Hospital for Sick Children to provide electrical safety information to children, parents, and health care providers through the use of computers. The Hospital for Sick Children has a public Web site known as "AboutKidsHealth". The web site is dedicated to the health and wellness of children and provides health information in formats appropriate to different age groups of children and to their parents. Three electrical safety modules have been developed and are available on AboutKidsHealth Web site.
