Electrical Safety

Several initiatives demonstrate Hydro One's commitment to health and safety in the workplace:

Creation of Hydro One Chair in Electrical Injury Endowment Fund

  • In June 2006, Hydro One created a permanent endowment fund called the Hydro One Chair in Electrical Injury at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and St. John's Rehab Hospital, the only such program in Canada. The program is in partnership with Dr. Joel Fish, Medical Director of the Ross Tilley Burn Unit at Sunnybrook. Over the next five years, Hydro One has committed $500,000 to push forward research and treatment of electrical burn patients. Read more in our fact sheet (PDF - 858 KB)
  • Dr. Joel Fish provides guidance to doctors throughout the province for the treatment of burn victims due to electrical contact injuries, as diagnosis and treatment of electrical burns is poorly understood in the medical community
  • Involves an electrical contact/flash incident form and guidance provided by Dr. Fish through telephone and the North Network
  • Working with St. John Ambulance to use improved electrical burn treatment information in first-aid training.

Multi-Workplace Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC)

  • An important component to the Internal Responsibility System
  • Replaces a geographically based JHSC structure with one that is more efficient and matches our organizational structure
  • All JHSC receive certification training as required by the Occupational Health & Safety Act
  • Highlighted accomplishments at 2003 Health & Safety Conference.

Hydro One Safety Rules

  • Project to review former Ontario Hydro Corporate Safety Rules & Policies book
  • A joint working team refreshed the rules to orient it to our current business
  • Hydro One and the Electrical & Utilities Safety Association at the request of the Ministry of Labour completed the new Electrical Utility Safety Rules
  • The new rules for work in the electrical environment combine the experience and expertise of both organizations.
