Energy Efficiency Tips and Tools

Switch and SaveHydro One is proud to support Natural Resources Canada’s Switch and Save campaign. The Federal Government has partnered with electric utilities, retailers, manufacturers and government agencies across Canada to promote compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs). So look for Switch the next time you’re out shopping for light bulbs. And, be sure to pick up a CFL that is ENERGY STAR-rated ... that’s your guarantee of energy efficiency!

How do CFLs work?
CFLs work the same way as long fluorescent tubes. The same gas is inside and they burn just as cool. They’ve just been twisted up and squeezed down to make them work in many different lighting fixtures.

Cooler and longer lasting
A single CFL, used for an average of three hours per day, will last up to 10 times longer than regular incandescent bulbs and save approximately $10 in electricity costs each year. Incandescent bulbs last about 10 per cent as long and waste up to 90 per cent of the energy they consume to produce heat, instead of light. CFLs burn cool, come in a variety of types and have really improved since they first appeared on the market. They’ve also come down in price!

For every job, there's a CFL

CFLs are now available in a broad range of shapes, sizes, light tones and wattages and are readily available online or at your local retailer. You’ll find CFLs to fit almost all fixtures, from ceiling units to standing lamps. A good idea is to start installing CFLs in areas where lights are on longest, such as the kitchen, family room and outdoors. Many people install CFLs in hard-to-reach areas because they don’t have to be changed as often. Just check the package to make sure a CFL will work with your dimmer or photocell.

Not all CFLs are equal
CFLs that carry the ENERGY STAR symbol have met strict product specifications for long life, energy savings, colour and brightness. On your next purchase, choose an ENERGY STAR-rated CFL to be sure that you’re looking at a bulb that’s among the best, most energy-efficient on the market! Go to energystar.gc.ca to find out more about other ENERGY STAR qualified products.

Make the switch today to compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs)
Using electricity more efficiently is good for your wallet and good for the environment. We’re all trying to find ways to save electricity. One of the easiest ways to get your home on the road to energy efficiency is to switch over to compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs).

Light your way to savings
Investing in energy-efficient light bulbs will pay off in savings on your electricity bills. The average home in Ontario has at least 30 light fixtures. By replacing traditional incandescent light bulbs with CFLs in high-use areas, you can save as much as 75 per cent per light on your electricity bill. You’ll pay off the added costs of the bulbs in less than two years, and they last for at least five years.
