Working in partnership with the Social Housing Services Corporation (SHSC),
Hydro One will contribute up to $1.5 million over three years to help
landlords of social housing properties served by Hydro One become more
energy efficient and reduce electricity consumption. This initiative is
one of several being undertaken by Hydro One as part of a multi-faceted
3-year conservation and demand management program.
SHSC will administer the incentive funding available from Hydro One as
part of its integrated Energy Management Program Pilot for social housing
landlords. Eligible social housing landlords may apply to SHSC for a grant
of up to $500 per housing unit to undertake energy audits and energy-efficiency
improvements. SHSC will report to Hydro One the kilowatt-hour energy savings
achieved by all retrofit projects funded under this initiative.
Why has Hydro One partnered with the SHSC?
This particular energy management program is designed specifically to
assist social housing landlords in Hydro One's service area. Hydro One
chose to enter into an agreement with the SHSC because of its unique relationship
with over 1000 social housing landlords in the province. It is therefore
well positioned to integrate the funding available from Hydro One into
the Energy Management Pilot Program it offers to social housing landlords
across the province. Read our press
release.
Who is the SHSC?
The Social Housing Services Corporation (SHSC) is an independent corporation
created in 2002 by provincial legislation to support affordable housing
in Ontario. SHSC offers programs and services to help social housing landlords
manage housing programs. For more information, visit www.shscorp.ca.
Who is eligible for funding?
Landlords of social housing properties in areas served by Hydro One are
eligible to apply for funding. Social housing landlords in Ontario are
non-profit corporations which receive government subsidies to provide
affordable housing to low-income residents.
What does Hydro One's funding cover?
Funding available from Hydro One will enable eligible social housing landlords
to undertake energy audits and subsequently retrofits that will improve
the energy efficiency of the units they manage, and also reduce their
electricity bills. Such improvements ultimately benefit the Hydro One
customers who live in these social housing properties.
Social housing landords selected will be eligible for $50 per housing
unit to conduct an initial energy audit. They subsequently may receive
up to $450 per unit toward the cost of implementing the cost-effective
energy efficiency solutions identified by the energy audit.
How long will this program run?
Hydro One's agreement with the SHSC is for up to $1.5 million over three
years, until December 31, 2008.
How do social housing landlords apply for funding?
The application process and selection criteria are being managed by SHSC.
