No-cost Low-cost Cooling Tips
We spend the majority of our energy dollars controlling the temperature
of our home. In the summer, that means keeping it cool. Before thinking
about air conditioning, try these passive cooling approaches first. Even
if you're using air conditioning, you'll use less and that lowers your
electricity use.

Draw the curtains on heat
Windows with southern and western exposure will likely allow the
most sun to shine in. There are a few ways to treat windows that
will help you keep your home cooler.
The most obvious thing to do is to close the drapes, blinds, or
curtains during the day. By doing this, and keeping the windows
shut, you will be able to keep the house closer to the temperature
it was first thing in the morning. A more permanent solution would
be the addition of window shades or awnings.

Let fans move the air
Ceiling fans help cool down your home. They don't use much electricity
and can help reduce the need for air conditioning. Make sure the fan
blows air downwards in summer. |
|
Cool down your menus too
In the summer, use the BBQ and include more cold foods and salads
in your menu. Try not to use appliances such as the stove, oven, dishwasher,
washer, dryer and clothes iron in the middle of the day. |

The real problem may be humidity
Humid homes feel hotter. Use exhaust fans in kitchens, bathrooms and
laundry areas to expel the air directly outside (not into walls or
attics). Avoid air-drying clothes in the home. Don't store firewood
inside. |
|
Not using it? Turn it off.
Lights, TVs, computers and other appliances all give off heat. In
the summer, it's more important than ever to turn it off if you're
not using it. You'll save energy twice. |

Strategic landscaping can cool your house
Deciduous trees, trimmed high to allow breezes to pass underneath
and circulate around the house, will contribute to cooling the house
exterior. They are also effective in keeping sun from the windows
and if they grow tall enough, they will help shade the roof. Trees
provide natural cooling inside and out. In the winter when the trees
have no leaves, the sun will help to heat your home. Think about this
when you're considering the landscaping of your property. |
