Electricity Updates

If your questions are not addressed in this section, feel free to contact us at:

E-mail: gen.connect@hydroone.com
Phone: 1-866-280-7712

For connections greater than 10 MW, please visit the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) website.

Government Request for Proposals (RFPs)

For information on the RFP process, please visit our RFP webpage.

For more information, please visit the Ontario Power Authority's RFP website at www.ontarioelectricityrfp.ca.

How does Metering work with RFP participants?
RFP winners must be wholesale market participants who are responsible for their own metering. They must engage their own Meter Service Provider and can refer to the Independent Electricity System Operator's (IESO) Market Rules.

Standard Offer Program

Hydro One remains committed to assisting generators in connecting to Hydro One's distribution system as participants in the government's Standard Offer Program. To help expedite the process, we've developed an online "Initial Feasibility Assessment Application Form" — simply click on the red button and fill out all required fields to submit your application. If you do not wish to fill it out online, please complete the faxable version (MS Word - 105 KB) and fax to 416-345-5443, Attention: Laura Rexe.

More details about the Standard Offer Program can be found on the following websites:

Distribution-Connected

How much does it cost to connect a generation facility for the purposes of selling electricity?
Connection costs vary widely and depend on the extent to which a generation facility impacts the distribution system. Typically, connection costs range from $50,000 to $300,000 provided that no major distribution system upgrades are required.

How much do I get paid for my generation?

  • Retail Generators will settle with Hydro One and will be paid based on the hourly spot market price.
  • Market participants will settle with the IESO.
  • Generators with a Power Purchase Agreement with the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) will be paid according to the terms of their contract.
  • For Standard Offer Settlement information, please consult the OPA website.

Can you send me a map of the distribution lines in my area so I can identify potential connection points?
Hydro One sends distribution maps for specific locations, such as those around identified road crossings or areas enclosed by identified roads. To request a map of Hydro One's distribution lines please send a map with a clearly identified proposed project location to gen.connect@hydroone.com. In consideration of the large number of requests being received by Hydro One, please prioritize the maps that you need to allow us to maintain quick and efficient responses.

What are the technical requirements for connecting to Hydro One's Distribution system?
Please refer to our Technical Requirements for Generators Connecting to Hydro One's Distribution System (PDF - 1.8 MB).

What approvals are necessary prior to connection?
It is the generator's responsibility to secure all required approvals needed from the various bodies. Subject to Hydro One witnessing and agreeing to commissioning test results, the customer must sign a Connection Agreement (CA) with Hydro One and present Hydro One with ESA certification.

Can I connect XX MW of generation to the line running through my property? Are any upgrades required? What is the maximum I can connect to this line?
To obtain some preliminary information, generators must complete Form A and submit it to Hydro One at gen.connect@hydroone.com. We will then undertake a high level assessment (initial feasibility) to determine whether the connection is feasible and if so, how it could impact the distribution system. These results will need to be confirmed by a Connection Impact Assessment (CIA). Your consultant can assist you in optimizing the generation size at a specific location.

How long will it take to complete the initial feasibility?
The Distribution System Code requires this work to be completed in 15 days, however, due to the amount of interest and large volume of requests we are currently facing, it will take longer.

How do I get guaranteed connection capacity from Hydro One? (How do I obtain a Queue position?)
In accordance with the Ontario Energy Board's Distribution System Code, your project will obtain a Queue position upon completion of a Connection Impact Assessment (CIA). For more information, please refer to the Distribution System Code on the OEB's website and our section on the Generation Projects Queue Process.
