Electricity Updates

Hydro One connects new sources of electricity to Ontario's grid. Working together with generation customers, we connect their facilities to Ontario's electricity system and transport their electricity to the market. Hydro One is committed to providing timely connections for new generators.

Key factors to consider in the connection of generation facilities:

  • Distance between generator and the closest acceptable system connection
  • Effect on existing customers and safety of public and staff
  • Ability to deliver all electricity to consumers with no bottlenecks.

Hydro One Networks has developed a new queuing process for generators connecting to Hydro One Network's distribution system. A queue position constitutes distribution capacity allocation. Given the potential for increased distributed generation developments in Ontario, it is important that distribution system capacity be made available to projects which are likely to proceed to go in-service. The new queuing process facilitates equitable and efficient connections. A process for moving generators from the old queue to the new queue has also been developed. Learn more about the Queue Process for Generation Projects.

600 MW GTA West Trafalgar RFP
On April 28, 2006, the Ontario Power Authority issued a draft Request for Proposals (RFP) for a generating facility with a contract capacity of 500 megawatt (MW) to 600 MW connected to the area surrounding Trafalgar TS. For details go to the RFP official web site www.ontarioelectricityrfp.ca.

1000 MW Combined Heat and Power RFP
On December 29, 2005, the Ontario Power Authority issued a draft Request for Proposals (RFP) for up to 1000 megawatts (MW) of combined heat and power generation in Ontario with a minimum contract capacity of 5 MW, except for district energy facility, which must have a minimum contract capacity of 2 MW. For details, go to the official RFP Web site at www.ontarioelectricityrfp.ca.

200 MW Renewables III RFP
On July 12, 2005, the Ontario Ministry of Energy issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) in draft form for up to 200 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy supply from renewable generating facilities with a contract capacity of between 0.25 MW and 19.99 MW, inclusive. For details, go to the official RFP Web site at www.ontarioelectricityrfp.ca.

1000 MW Renewables II RFP
On June 17, 2005, the Ontario Ministry of Energy issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) for up to 1000 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy supply from renewable generating facilities with a contract capacity of between 20.0 MW and 200.0 MW, inclusive. For details, go to the official RFP Web site at www.ontarioelectricityrfp.ca.

2500 MW New Clean Generation and Demand Side RFP
On September 13, 2004, the Ontario Ministry of Energy issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) for 2,500 megawatts (MW) of new clean generation (including co-generation and distributed generation), demand response, and demand-side management.

300 MW Renewables' RFP
On June 24, 2004, the Ontario Ministry of Energy issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) to solicit approximately 300 megawatts (MW) of capacity from new renewable generating facilities.

To start the Pre-Bid process, proponents need to work with Hydro One for a Preliminary Connection Assessment. Hydro One has developed a fast-track process that provides preliminary assessments to proponents wishing to submit a bid. In trying to meet the increased demand for assessments in the limited time period, it is imperative that ALL required data be submitted and that only one connection option be included per project or bid.

Pre- Bid: For proponents who are not engaged in the connection process, preliminary assessment/agreement are available. Generator covers this cost. Successful proponents will receive these details once selected

Connecting your generation project to our transmission or distribution system requires approvals and following rules and codes from various bodies and regulators that govern the electricity business in Ontario.

Still have questions?
If you are interested in connecting a generation facility to Hydro One's system, please e-mail gen.connect@hydroone.com or call 1-866-280-7712.

If you are planning to install a generator that employs a renewable technology and is less than 500 kW, please consider our Net Metering program. All residential and solar panel installations would benefit from this program, as would small wind turbines. Please visit our Net Metering section or call 1-877-447-4412 for information.
