Supply to York Region - Parkway Transformer Station and Line Project

Map of Supply to York Region - Parkway Transformer Station and Line ProjectThe growing need for electrical supply in the Greater Toronto Area and specifically in the communities of Richmond Hill, Markham and Vaughan requires Hydro One to reinforce our existing electricity transmission facilities in southern York Region. The timing for the placing in-service of the transmission line and most transmission station facilities is also linked to ensuring reliable electricity supply to the Greater Toronto Area after the shutdown of Lakeview Generating Station in April, 2005.

Hydro One and the local electric utilities in York Region have worked together on a transmission solution that will increase electrical transmission capacity, improve power reliability and reduce power losses.

The proposed facilities involve the construction of a transformer station and a transmission line running parallel to existing lines, both on the existing Parkway Belt hydro corridor.

  • The new transformer station (Parkway TS) is now being constructed on the southwest corner of Warden Avenue and Highway 407 in Markham
  • The new 6.5-km transmission line is now being constructed from Parkway TS to the existing Richmond Hill TS just west of Bayview Avenue in Richmond Hill

Supply to York Region - Parkway Transformer Station and Line Project

March - November 2003
Conduct stakeholder consultation

Utilities
Hydro One worked with local utilities (Aurora Hydro, Hydro Vaughan, Newmarket Hydro, Markham Hydro and Richmond Hill Hydro), to ensure continued reliable electricity supply to York Region communities. The results of their cooperation are available in the joint planning study (PDF 1.2 MB).

Local Elected Officials and staff
Hydro One met with staff at Municipal and Regional levels to discuss this project. Elected officials in Markham were also briefed on the project.

Public Information Centre
Hydro One held a Public Information Centre on November 25 at the St. Robert Catholic High School in Thornhill, centrally located within the project study area. Through a series of information panels (PDF 3 MB), brochure (PDF 130 KB), discussion and feedback forms, valuable input was gathered on the project, including preferences on the line location within the existing right-of-way and preferences on tower type.

November 2003
Select preferred option
Based on public input, steel poles were selected as the tower type for the transmission line. The recommended alignment for the new line was along the northern side of the existing tower lines on the transmission corridor.

December 2003
Ontario Energy Board approval
Hydro One's application to the Ontario Energy Board (PDF 9 MB) was approved on December 23, 2003. The approval (PDF 90 KB) was issued through an OEB Decision and Order.

January - March 2004
Remaining approvals and permits obtained
Hydro One continued to meet with numerous government agencies, including the Town of Markham, Ministry of Transportation, Ministry of Culture, Toronto Regional Conservation Authority, Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment Canada and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans to ensure that their requirements were met.

March 2004
Begin construction

Parkway Transformer Station
Construction of the Parkway Transformer Station began in March 2004, and continues today. The first stage of the station is expected to be in service by April 2005.

6.5 km Transmission Line
Construction of the 6.5-km transmission line began in May 2004 and continues today. Construction stages include: access road layout; access road construction; augering for tower foundation footings; pouring tower foundation footings; erecting towers; and stringing conductors. The line is expected to be in service by April 2005.

Stormwater and Habitat Management
The realignment of existing creeks and the construction of two stormwater management ponds will result in effective stormwater management and a net increase of fish habitat at the site.
