Cooksville TS Upgrade and Transmission Line Project

Background
The Ontario Government passed a regulation requiring Ontario Power Generation to shut down Lakeview Generating Station (GS) by April 30, 2005 in an effort to improve air quality. Lakeview GS is currently an important source of electricity for southern Mississauga, Oakville and west Toronto.

To facilitate the closure of Lakeview GS, Hydro One must make changes on our transmission system at three locations. Our switching station at Lakeview GS must be shut down, new switching equipment must be installed at our Cooksville Transformer Station (TS) at Cawthra Road, and a new supply line must be constructed to Cooksville TS to replace the supply currently provided by Lakeview GS.

To address the need for a new supply line to Cooksville TS, Hydro One looked at four alternatives and selected a transmission option that is least costly and least disruptive from a community perspective. This option requires the construction of an additional line between Cooksville TS and Applewood Junction (see map), to enable an additional power supply from Manby TS in Etobicoke. This new line will be buried within the existing right of way, as it is less costly than building an overhead line due to the presence of two existing overhead lines and existing EnerSource Hydro Mississauga lines on the right of way.

The voltage and current associated with power supply along the right of way will not change. The only difference is that the power will flow through three transmission lines rather than the two that exist today. To ensure that any community concerns are identified and addressed, Hydro One has undertaken a consultation program with elected officials, affected neighbours, and the local elementary school.

Project Description
The project involves upgrades at Cooksville TS at Cawthra Road and the transmission line connecting it to Applewood Junction near Stanfield Road, and the removal of switching equipment at Lakeview Switching Station.

    Cooksville Transformer Station (TS)
    • Install new switching equipment
    • Replace existing chain link fence with solid fence, and extend it on Hydro One property to accomodate new switching equipment.

    Hydro One transmission corridor
    Lakeview Switching Station (SS)
    • Remove switching equipment.

All of this work will occur within the existing transmission corridor and station site.

Construction Activities at Cooksville TS

  • In January 2005, Hydro One notified residents abutting the right-of-way that we were installing a construction fence to restrict access to the right-of-way and that construction of the trench for the underground transmission line would start shortly. This letter was also sent to the City of Mississauga, the local councillors for the area, and the school board and principal of Westacres School. Download the Transmission Corridor Construction Notice to Homeowners - January 2005 (PDF 402 KB).
  • In February 2005, construction activity at the road crossing will occur.

Underground Transmission Line Description

  • The underground transmission line is located on the east-west hydro corridor that runs north of the North Service Road.
  • Two overhead lines already exist on this right-of-way and will continue to remain in place.
  • The underground line will extend 1.3 km from Cooksville TS to a point known as Applewood Jct. (at Stanfield Road).
  • Work along the right of way is expected to begin in February 2005.
  • Hydro One typically builds these lines overhead, however, because of the presence of the existing lines on the right of way, it is less costly to build the new line underground.
  • Once completed, residents will not see any physical changes to the corridor, with the exception of cable connectors near Applewood Jct. (this equipment is similar to what already exists on the right of way).
